SOAR at the House of Commons

Dr Ciara McGrath from the University of Manchester visited the House of Commons this month as part of the Institute of Engineering and Technology’s 150th anniversary celebrations. The Parliamentary reception, hosted by Chi Onwurah MP, took place on Wednesday 1st December to discuss the importance of embedding engineering into current primary school learning and support #EngineeringKidsFutures. The engineering model of SOAR (our Satellite for Orbital Aerodynamics Research) was on display and Ciara discussed various aspects of the DISCOVERER mission as well as her other research interests with a variety of Members of Parliament and the House of Lords.

In October, Ciara presented her talk ‘Pirates, pyramids and porpoises: what’s space got to do with it?‘ as part of our ‘Women in Aerospace’ event, her slides can be found at DISCOVERER ‘Women in Aerospace’ Webinar.

We would also like to extend our huge congratulations to Ciara on being awarded the IET’s Young Women Engineer of the Year for 2021! https://youngwomenengineer.theiet.org/
